Non-Ferrous Metal can be defined as simply any form of ferrous metal which is considered waste. Nearly all non-ferrous metal can be recycled. Non-Ferrous metal comes in many various forms. Some of the most common forms of non-ferrous Metal are scrap copper, scrap aluminium, scrap brass & bronze, scrap tin, scrap alloy, scrap stainless steel.
Here are some details about these common forms of non-ferrous metal.
All aluminium products can be recycled after use. Aluminium Scrap is generally taken by road to the non-ferrous metal recycling plant where it is checked and sorted to determine composition and value. The scrap aluminium is then loaded into a non-ferrous metal recycling furnace, which melts the aluminium completely. This molten metal is then cast or processed - using the same techniques as primary processing. Scrap aluminium is a common non-ferrous metal.
Scrap brass, brass is the term used for alloys of copper and zinc in a solid solution. Typically it is more than 50% copper and from 5 to 20% zinc. Scrap brass is remelted, at a non-ferrous metal processing facility, there is usually some evolution of the more volatile zinc non-ferrous metal. This is made up in the melt to bring it back within specification. Scrap brass is also a common non-ferrous metal.
Scrap copper, process scrap copper arising from manufacturing processes is saved and sold for recycling to keep down the cost of the product. On average, 40% of all production is from non-ferrous metal recycled metal. Simple remelting, for example, generated during power cable drawing, can recycle good quality high conductivity copper scrap. Copper scrap is a common non-ferrous metal.
Stainless steel scrap, Stainless steel objects rarely become waste at the end of their useful life. Recycled stainless scrap objects are systematically separated and recovered to go back into the production process through recycling. The use of non-ferrous metal, stainless steel scrap is fundamental to the steel-making process. There are two types of scrap - reclaimed non-ferrous metal (old scrap) and industrial non-ferrous metal (new scrap). Reclaimed non-ferrous metal includes industrial equipment, tanks, washing machines and refrigerators that have reached the end of their service life.
